Please check out information about our traditional Day Camp, Horse Camps, and Ranch Camp at www.roughingit.com
Roughing It is ideally located on 900 acres in the beautiful Lafayette Reservoir recreation area with nearby swimming and equestrian sites. Here children learn, grow, explore, and make new friends where exercise and fresh air are abundant.
Camp Directors Ann and Hobie Woods founded Roughing It Day Camp in 1972, and have devoted over 35 years to the camp. Indisputably the most experienced camp directors in the Bay Area, Ann and Hobie maintain Roughing It's reputation as "Best of the Bay." They are always available to talk with parents.
Staff is selected based on prior experience working with children, positive attitude, and character. Hobie and Ann Woods, with the advantage of 70 years of combined experience in youth programs, interview and select the entire adult staff, as well as train and supervise them during camp. The applicant pool consists of over 800 adult college sophomores and older, ages 20-26 years. Many of our staff have been former Roughing It campers and over half return each summer.
Every camper belongs to a group of 15 campers of similar age and gender. An adult group counselor provides consistent leadership with the same group of campers for the entire session. Each week builds upon the next as staff utilizes specific activities to promote teamwork and friendship. Junior counselors assist with the youngest camper groups. With all adult staff included, the ration is 4 campers to 1 adult.
